科尔沁国家级自然保护区地处欧亚草原亚洲东部，大兴安岭南麓，科尔沁沙地的北缘，是一个以保护科尔沁草原，榆杏树林自然景观，鹤、鹳类等珍禽及其赖以生存的栖息环境——湿地为主要保护对象的综合性自然保护区。保护区位于内蒙古科右中旗境内，北靠突泉县，东与吉林向海保护区相连，总面积 126987 公顷。 1995 年 11 月 6 日经国务院批准为国家级自然保护区，并被列入《中国生物多样性保护行动计划》优先保护生态系统。 1997 年加入中国“人与生物圈网络”。

　　原始的自然环境，得天独厚的生态环境，丰富了保护区的动植物资源。据调查，保护区内有鸟类 200 余种，有种子植物 500 余种。目前已发现鸟类 175 种，其中丹顶鹤、白鹤、白头鹤、白鹳、黑鹳、大鸨、金雕等 7 种为国家一级保护鸟类。另有白枕鹤、蓑羽鹤、灰鹤、大天鹅、白琵鹭、白额雁、小鸥、秃鹫等 29 种为国家二级保护鸟类。其中白鹳、丹顶鹤、白鹤、白枕鹤是世界濒危鸟类，大鸨和白琵鹭是世界受严重威胁的珍稀鸟类。

　　科尔沁国家级自然保护区是亚洲的一片净土，是中国的一块宝地，是内蒙古大草原上一颗璀璨的明珠。大自然的天成之美，造就了科尔沁国家级自然保护区以鹤、鹳类为主的湿地珍禽景观；以蒙古黄榆、五角枫为主的天然疏林景观；以西伯利亚山杏灌丛和坨甸相间草原为主的科尔沁草原景观；以芦苇、蒲草为主的水生植物景观，使科尔沁国家级自然保护区成为植物的王国，野生动物的天堂，百鸟的乐园。
